History & Background
Todai-ji Temple was established in 752 AD during the Nara period under Emperor Shomu's reign. It was built as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples in Japan and played a central role in the country's religious and political life. The temple has been rebuilt twice after fires, with the current Daibutsuden dating back to the Edo period (1709). Todai-ji remains a vital center for the Kegon school of Buddhism and a symbol of Japan's rich cultural heritage.
