History & Background

The Twelve Apostles were formed by erosion over 10-20 million years. The harsh weather conditions from the Southern Ocean gradually eroded the soft limestone cliffs, creating caves, then arches, and eventually the stacks seen today. Despite the name, there were never twelve stacks; only eight remained by the early 2000s, and one collapsed in 2005. The site is part of the Port Campbell National Park, established to protect this fragile coastline and its unique geological features.
