History & Background
The Marmore Gorge and its waterfalls were created in 271 BC by the Romans, who diverted the Velino River to prevent flooding in the Rieti Valley. The engineering feat was overseen by consul Manius Curius Dentatus. Over centuries, the gorge became a symbol of human ingenuity harmonizing with nature.
