Loch Ard Gorge is named after the shipwreck of the Loch Ard, which ran aground on nearby Muttonbird Island in 1878. Of the 54 passengers and crew, only two survived: Tom Pearce, a young ship's apprentice, and Eva Carmichael, a passenger.
