Point Sur Lighthouse

Perched dramatically on a volcanic rock 361 feet above the Pacific Ocean, Point Sur Lighthouse is a historic beacon that has guided mariners since 1889. This isolated lighthouse offers breathtaking coastal views and a glimpse into California's maritime history. Visitors can tour the fully preserved light station, including the keeper's quarters and the original Fresnel lens. History & Background

Point Sur Lighthouse was first lit on August 1, 1889, after three years of construction. Built to protect ships from the dangerous coastline known as the 'Graveyard of the Pacific,' it operated continuously until 1974 when it was automated. The light station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. During World War II, it served as a lookout station for enemy submarines. Today it's one of the only complete turn-of-the-century light stations open to the public in California.
