History & Background

The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. It was destroyed by fire in 1613, rebuilt in 1614, and then demolished in 1644. The modern reconstruction, Shakespeare's Globe, was the vision of American actor and director Sam Wanamaker. After decades of fundraising and planning, the new Globe opened in 1997, just 230 meters from the site of the original theatre. It remains a celebrated cultural landmark and a testament to Shakespeare's enduring legacy.
