History & Background
Naoshima Bath (I♥︎YU) opened in 2009 as part of the Benesse Art Site Naoshima, a project that transforms the island into a living art museum. Artist Shinro Ohtake was commissioned to redesign an old public bathhouse, incorporating his signature eclectic style. The name 'I♥︎YU' is a playful pun, as 'yu' means 'hot water' in Japanese. The project aimed to revitalize local culture while attracting art tourists, making art accessible in everyday spaces. It has since become one of Naoshima's most beloved attractions.
