History & Background

Wind Cave was discovered in 1881 by settlers who heard a whistling sound from the cave's natural entrance. It became the first cave designated as a national park in 1903, thanks to its unique geological features. The cave's name comes from the wind currents at its entrance, created by atmospheric pressure differences. The park also preserves 28,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie, one of the last remaining in the U.S.
