History & Background
El Panecillo, meaning 'The Little Bread Loaf' due to its shape, has been a significant site since pre-Columbian times. The hill was a sacred place for the indigenous people of Quito. In 1976, the Virgin of Quito statue was erected, designed by Spanish artist Agustín de la Herrán Matorras.
