History & Background

The Monsal Trail was once part of the Midland Railway's Manchester, Buxton, Matlock, and Midlands Junction Railway, which opened in 1863. The line was closed in 1968 as part of the Beeching cuts. In 1981, the route was repurposed as a recreational trail, opening up the stunning landscapes of the Peak District to walkers and cyclists. The trail's tunnels, which were closed for many years, were reopened in 2011 after extensive safety work, allowing visitors to experience the full length of this historic route.
