History

Gas Works Park was once the site of the Seattle Gas Light Company's gasification plant, which operated from 1906 to 1956. The plant produced gas from coal and oil, powering much of Seattle during its heyday. After its closure, the city acquired the land and transformed it into a park, opening to the public in 1975. The design by Richard Haag preserved many of the plant's structures, turning them into artistic and functional elements of the park. This innovative approach to urban redevelopment has made Gas Works Park a landmark in landscape architecture.

  • Bring a kite or a picnic to make the most of the open grassy areas.
