History & Background

Castle Drogo was commissioned by Julius Drewe, a wealthy businessman, who wanted a modern castle that evoked the grandeur of medieval fortresses. Construction began in 1911 under the guidance of Sir Edwin Lutyens, one of Britain's most celebrated architects. The castle was completed in 1930, though some interior work continued until 1931. Despite its medieval appearance, Castle Drogo was equipped with modern amenities like central heating and electric lighting. Today, it is managed by the National Trust and is undergoing a major restoration to address water ingress issues.
