Cragside was built in 1863 as a modest hunting lodge for Lord Armstrong, a pioneering industrialist and inventor. Over the years, it was expanded into a grand country house, becoming a showcase for Armstrong's engineering prowess. In 1878, it became the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectric power, thanks to Armstrong's innovative use of water from the estate's lakes. The house and gardens were donated to the National Trust in 1977 and have been meticulously preserved to reflect their Victorian splendor.
