History & Background

Cerro Roraima is part of the Pakaraima mountain range and is estimated to be around 2 billion years old, making it one of the oldest geological formations on Earth. Indigenous Pemon people consider it a sacred place, calling it 'The Mother of All Waters' due to the numerous rivers originating from its plateau. The mountain gained global fame after British explorer Everard im Thurn's 1884 expedition, which later inspired literary works. Today, it remains a bucket-list destination for trekkers and nature enthusiasts.

Insider Tips

Hire a local guide for the trek—the terrain can be challenging and navigation tricky without experience.

Pack lightweight but warm clothing; temperatures can drop significantly at higher elevations.

Bring plenty of water and high-energy snacks—the climb is strenuous and hydration is key.

Visit during the dry season (December to April) for safer and more manageable hiking conditions.

Wear sturdy, broken-in hiking boots to handle the rocky and sometimes slippery paths.
