History & Background

McKittrick Canyon has a rich history tied to the Guadalupe Mountains. The canyon was named after Felix McKittrick, a rancher who settled in the area in the late 19th century. Later, Wallace Pratt, a geologist for Humble Oil (now ExxonMobil), built a cabin in the canyon in the 1930s, which still stands today. Pratt donated the land to the National Park Service, helping to establish Guadalupe Mountains National Park in 1972. The canyon's unique ecosystem and scenic beauty have made it a cherished natural landmark.
