Built in 1245 by Count Diether V of Katzenelnbogen, Rheinfels Castle was originally a stronghold to protect the toll station on the Rhine. It grew into one of the most formidable fortresses in the region, surviving numerous sieges and expansions over the centuries. During the Thirty Years' War, it withstood a 15-month siege, earning a reputation as an impregnable fortress. However, it was eventually destroyed by French troops in 1797.
