History & Background
Constructed between 1524 and 1531 under the orders of King Francis I, the Château d'If was initially designed to protect Marseille from naval attacks. However, due to its isolated location, it was soon repurposed as a prison, housing political and religious detainees. Its most famous fictional inmate, Edmond Dantès, was the protagonist of Dumas' 1844 novel. Although the castle never held as many prisoners as Alcatraz, its literary fame has cemented its place in popular culture. It was opened to the public in 1890 and remains a symbol of Marseille's maritime heritage.
