History & Background

Discovered in 1900 by brothers Frank and Albert Michaud, Jewel Cave was named for its sparkling calcite crystals. It was designated a national monument in 1908 to preserve its unique geological features. Over the years, exploration has revealed its vast extent, making it one of the most significant cave systems in the world. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a key role in developing early infrastructure, including the original stairway into the cave.
