History & Background
Built in 1772, this house belonged to the Martínez Sáenz family and became the secret meeting place for revolutionaries planning Paraguay's independence from Spain. On the night of May 14-15, 1811, key figures in the independence movement gathered here to finalize their plans. The next day, Paraguay declared its independence. The house was declared a National Monument in 1943 and opened as a museum in 1965 to preserve this important piece of Paraguayan history.
