History & Background
The Crazy Horse Memorial was commissioned by Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear in 1948 to honor Native American heritage. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski began work on the mountain carving in 1949, and the project continues today under the guidance of his family. The memorial is funded entirely by donations and admissions, refusing government funding to maintain independence. When finished, it will depict Crazy Horse pointing over his horse's head, symbolizing his famous quote, 'My lands are where my dead lie buried.'
