History & Background
Mount Misen has been a sacred site since ancient times, central to the spiritual significance of Miyajima. The mountain is named after the monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai), who founded the Shingon sect of Buddhism here in 806 AD. He is said to have performed ascetic training for 100 days on the mountain, during which he lit a flame that has been kept burning continuously in Reikado Hall for over 12 centuries. The mountain's temples and shrines have been pilgrimage sites for generations, and its natural beauty inspired many classical Japanese poets.
