History & Background
Sajama National Park was established in 1939, making it Bolivia's first national park. The area has long been sacred to the Aymara people, who have inhabited the region for centuries. The park's namesake, Nevado Sajama, is considered a sacred mountain in Andean cosmology. The park was created to protect the unique high-altitude ecosystems, including the world's highest forest of queñua trees, which grow at elevations over 5,000 meters.
