History & Background
Mount Rushmore was conceived by historian Doane Robinson in 1923 to promote tourism in South Dakota. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum was chosen to lead the project, which began in 1927 and was completed in 1941. The faces of the four presidents were selected to represent key themes in American history: Washington for independence, Jefferson for expansion, Roosevelt for conservation, and Lincoln for unity. The project employed over 400 workers, who used dynamite and precise drilling to carve the granite.
