The Bungle Bungle Range remained largely unknown to the outside world until the 1980s when it was 'discovered' by a documentary crew. However, the Aboriginal people, particularly the Kija and Jaru communities, have known and cherished this land for tens of thousands of years. The name 'Purnululu' means 'sandstone' in the Kija language. The range's distinctive banding results from layers of sandstone with differing moisture levels and cyanobacteria growth. Declared a national park in 1987 and a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003, it now attracts visitors from around the globe.
